The Federal Institute for Research on Building, Urban Affairs and Spatial Development (BBSR) within the Federal Office for Building and Regional Planning (BBR) supports residential policy in Germany through scientific political consultation as well as programme and project management. This is an area concerned with sustainable and demand orientated housing facilities in all areas just as with questions regarding the cost and quality and the social security of the housing.
Central points are analyses of the situation and of the development of the housing markets (regionalised housing market observations) and of the investment activities in new and existing buildings as well as supporting and evaluating relevant federal assistance measures, programmes and initiatives. Special attention is paid to the high relevance of housing for urban development.
On an international level, the BBSR is involved in the European housing policy dialogue and supports the states of middle and Eastern Europe in the development of functioning housing markets.
