Germany in Europe. Assessment of the ESPON results of 2006 from a German point of view

Ed.: BBSR, Bonn 2009

The study "Germany in Europe" assesses the results of the ESPON 2006 Programme from a national perspective. In the centre of attention are the classification and analysis of the Europe-wide results from a German perspective. This process aims at the following:

- The German actors' utility stemming from ESPON results is improved by providing an analysis from a national perspective.

- As a result of the breakdown of results from the European to the national level, the overall perspective is widened. This allows new insights into existing results.

- The thematic analyses relate the priorities of the Territorial Agenda of the European Union to the spatial development in Germany.

- The analysis of the results of the ESPON 2006 Programme is furthermore connected to the programme's assessment. Conclusions are given for future ESPON Programme activities. The analyses are based on the reports of 34 projects conducted in the ESPON 2006 Programme, which have been reviewed and evaluated.

Since the German regions have been assessed on the basis of previous ESPON results, this publication consists of a systematic and very summarising presentation of a number of ESPON projects. Further conclusions from this review of ESPON results are made in the related BBR journal Forschungen, issue 135. These conclusions also include the identification of analytical and thematic gaps of European spatial research and the need for further research.
