Infrastructure and services of general interest
The task area "Infrastructure and services of general interest" is a key topic that permeates the research and consulting activities of the BBSR. Public services comprise services that encapsulate a special general and public interest. The establishment of equal living conditions in all sub-regions of the federal territory requires that public services are secured comprehensively. For those services to be rendered, infrastructure must be in place.
According to the principles of regional planning pursuant to the federal Regional Planning Act (Section 2 ROG), the basic supply of the population with technical infrastructure services must be ensured across the territory, with social infrastructure having to be focused primarily in "central locations". Settlement patterns must also be concentrated in and geared to productive "central locations".
