The Federal Institute for Research on Building, Urban Affairs and Spatial Development (BBSR) supports transnational cooperation in the field of urban planning/urban development through scientific policy consultation and programme and project management. On a national level, it is involved with the operative levels of urban district, city and city region and their requirements from a future-securing urban development policy on a federal level. Central points are analyses of urban planning/urban development political strategies, instruments and processes as well as case study orientated analyses of urban planning projects in form of innovative model plans.
A further focus point is the assistance of urban development as well as the European assistance policy for cities. Here, the central tasks are the operation of an urban planning assistance monitor as a basis for the analysis of regional distribution of programme measures and the monitoring of their effect. For the Federal Ministry of the Interior, Building and Community (BMI), the BBSR periodically produces reports on the situation and on the cities' perspectives as well as on urban development policy in Germany.
