Core tasks of the Federal Institute for Research on Building, Urban Affairs and Spatial Development

The following core tasks outline the profile of the Federal Institute for Research on Building, Urban Affairs and Spatial Development (BBSR):

Information principles

Constant provision/granting, utilization and analysis of relevant spatial data/information as well as description and evaluation of spatial developments and trends on the housing- and property market.

Reports

Provision of information on spatial and urban development as well as on developments in the building, housing and property business as foundation for government consulting of European Committees, the Federal Government and the Federal States and also for subject specific public information.

Expert reports and technical analyses

Preparation of information on selected problems and political tasks /and issues concerning spatial and urban development as well as building, housing and property business.

Research management and supervision

Assistance/support of the Federal Ministry of the Interior, Building and Community (BMI) with the technical and administrative realization of pertinent research programmes. The latest programmes are:

  • General Departmental Research
  • Experimental Housing and Urban Development (ExWoSt)
  • Demonstration Projects of Spatial Planning (MORO)
  • Future Building

Committee work

Participation in expert panels as well as representation of the Federal Ministry in national and international committees.

Transfer of results

The transfer of results includes management of expert conferences, publication of research results as well as of the scientific journal "Informationen zur Raumentwicklung". Almost all results can be downloaded free of charge on this homepage. The publications of the BBSR are based on the publication concept.

Management of initiatives

The Federal Institute coordinates initiatives of the Federal Ministry. It supports on specialist as well as organizational and operative level. Currently, these are:
