In addition to the occasional criticism of the operation of airports or the demand for site closures, supporters emphasize the (regional) economic advantages emanating from airports, which should not be assessed solely on the basis of economic criteria. In connection with this, the question arises as to what significance the airports in Germany actually have and how this is to be classified spatially and in terms of society as a whole. The analysis deals with this question and gives an overview of the spatial and functional structures of the airports in Germany and shows the importance of Germany as an air traffic location.
Due to its geographical location and globalization, Germany is an international air traffic location for the transport of passengers and freight. The air traffic infrastructure and the efficient connection to air traffic are relevant for securing the international competitiveness of the economy and the quality of life in Germany. The 23 main airports form the backbone for the transport of passengers and air freight.
Accessibility analyzes make it clear that many cities and regions have good car connections to the main airports. The individual regions and Germany as a business location as a whole benefit from a dense network of airports of different sizes and facilities and thus from good accessibility in the networked world.
