An important goal of the German urban development funding program “Städtebauförderung”, is to make assisted areas attractive as places to live. The program enables municipalities to implement targeted structural or social improvements that contribute to residents' satisfaction with the area. Survey results from the socioeconomic panel (SOEP) in combination with the BBSR's urban development monitoring can be used to capture how people perceive their neighbourhood. Overall, a large proportion of residents have a positive view of their own residential area. However, the data show differences between areas eligible for funding under the Stätdebauförderung-program and areas not eligible for funding. People who tend to rate their residential area as “good” or “very good” are less likely to be found in areas receiving urban development funding. This suggests that areas with the greater challenges are more likely to receive assistants.
