The new Atlas of Urban and Regional Development by the Federal Institute for Research on Building, Urban Affairs and Spatial Development (BBSR) focuses on the spatial effects of COVID-19. Are the experiences of lockdowns and the rapid development of home offices leading to new housing preferences? How does this change the relationship between urban and rural areas? What other spatial effects can be expected from the push in digitalisation, e. g. in the economy or in online trade?
On more than 130 pages, the maps and graphs offer a detailed and multifaceted overview of regional differences in living conditions and their developments, with a special focus on the pandemic years 2020 and 2021. Almost all socially significant topics such as the labour market, social structure and inequality, demography, economy and housing, environment and land use are addressed. One chapter is devoted exclusively to the temporal and spatial spread of COVID-19 in Germany and neighbouring countries. The atlas thus provides an overall insight into the consequences of COVID-19 for our cities and regions, which has been lacking in research to date.
