The analysis takes the term "lignite regions" as a basis, which suggests that the initial spatial conditions are principally similar. Spatial peculiarities and individual features of the structural change areas are compared with each other. The comparison also aims to extend the existing research on the economic and social conditions and to understand spatial structure-related trends in the course of structural change by means of continuous observation. The study is carried out along the scales of "federal state" (Bundesland), "region" and "municipality" and serves to spatialise structural change. This will create understanding for the individual transformation processes in lignite regions. At the same time, it shows their dependence on spatial structure and location.
In the study, cartographic and textual analyses and comparisons are developed, in which the following spatial structure-related features and spatial definitions are investigated:
