Spatial goods traffic analyses - new techniques, new possibilities

Abstract

For a preferably well-founded policy advice in the sector of goods traffic it is becoming more and more important to make optimal use of the existing data sources and to combine them. From the data type - linkage data that depict origin-destination relations - and the data quantity - consisting of an unusually large number of observations (data sets), special requirements result for data processing and for the presentation of the results. In this connection the term "big data" is mentioned. Since this enormous wealth of data can no longer be processed with normal standard software, so-called business-intelligence solutions are increasing in importance. These offer techniques for the simple access and the efficient analysis of complex data structures. The article provides an insight into the possibilities of this new IT-technology and indicates examples of application with regard to goods traffic.
