Impacts of trams on the economy and the society of a city

Abstract

Tram projects are established first of all to improve the traffic conditions in a city, but they also have economic and social impacts. Thus, for instance, it becomes clear from an economic perspective that new tram lines can clearly influence land prices in their catchment areas. With regard to social effects, an increased social inclusion, the reduction of segregation, the increased satisfaction of the residents of a quarter but also gentrification effects are being discussed. This article gives an overview of these effects and focuses on their general conditions and influencing factors in this context. On this basis, it finally discusses some approaches to consider the impacts of tram projects on the economy and society and to ensure a future-oriented urban development in this way.
