In order to slow down climate change we need to save energy, live more efficiently and reduce the emission of CO2. Buildings still offer great potentials for savings. The current issue of the specialist journal "Informationen zur Raumentwicklung" (IzR) shows how the existing building stock can be developed further in a way that is appropriate for the climate and saves energy.

Taking the KfW-programme "Energetic Urban Rehabilitation" as a point of departure, the authors report on heterogeneous quarter approaches in this issue, which they have tested in initiatives and projects such as TransStadt, Sandy or EnEff:Stadt for six years. Integrated quarter concepts, instruments for energetic rehabilitation, possibilities for the participation of owners or the intelligent application of innovative technologies are in the focus of the projects. The focus is mainly on the quarter.

The authors show how actors in urban quarters can save energy and expand renewable energy sources. They associate themes such as urban development, housing construction, building conservation and energy. They consider the relationships of the local actors and evaluate the economic efficiency and acceptance of the projects. The capacities that quarters require for the implementation are also in the focus.

But do the projects really achieve the envisaged goals? How can buildings that are listed monuments be rehabilitated in an energy-efficient manner? And how do the municipalities manage the heating turnaround? The perspectives from which the authors consider the theme "energy in the quarter" are different: some consider it from the point of view of promotion and financing, others approach it rather technically and yet others socially. But the authors in this issue have one feature in common: they show how the actors can enlarge the integrated quarter approach by energetic supply concepts – in favour of a local energy turnaround.
