Spatially effective developments do not know national borders. Whether global economic dynamics and their drawbacks such as the financial and economic crisis in the first decade of this millennium, the increasingly clear effects of man-made climate change, migration flows or the Covid-19 pandemic. Territorial cohesion in the EU is more important than ever. The renewed "Territorial Agenda 2030" takes this into account – by addressing both a green and a just Europe. It is to be adopted by the responsible European ministers during the German Council Presidency at the end of 2020 and to form a new action-oriented framework for the future.

With the Discussion Forum on Spatial Development, the Federal Ministry of the Interior, Building and Community has created a platform on which practitioners, scientists, politicians and the public can exchange views on current issues relating to spatial development. This year's Discussion Forum focused on the "Territorial Agenda 2030" of the EU. Well-known experts exchanged views on the goals and the implementation process of this Agenda. This issue summarises key contributions to this Discussion and names perspectives for an integrated European spatial development policy.
