URBACT is a programme of the European Commission and the EU member states as well as Norway and Switzerland. Since 2002, the programme has been promoting the transfer of knowledge and experience between European cities in all fields of integrated urban development. Like URBACT I, the second programming period URBACT II was also accompanied at the national level.
URBACT offers cities, which face common or similar problems, tasks or conceptual ideas, the opportunity to exchange views on possible solutions and instruments and to develop these further.
With URBACT II, the path taken in the EU programming period 2007-2013 was continued to offer cities throughout Europe a platform to incorporate existing knowledge and experiences and to reflect upon these with the fellow partners. The opportunity of the programme was to learn from others as well as to discuss and test innovative approaches to urban development.
At the national level, URBACT II was professionally monitored and evaluated. This issue of "Werkstatt: Praxis" shows essential fields of action and model approaches which give impulses for the further distribution of integrated strategies of urban development. URBACT II addresses all cities of the European Union, Switzerland and Norway with more than 10 000 inhabitants as well as authorities and universities. The programme pursues three objectives:
