Research Project: Climate resilient urban regeneration

Successful approaches of cooperation and communication supporting climate adaptation in urban planning processes

Project briefing

  • Status Completed
  • Project duration October 2017 – October 2020
  • Programme ExWoSt

The project records the results of the research programme StadtKlimaExWoSt (Urban Strategies for Adapting to Climate Change) and other research looking at the implementation of climate adaption measures in municipalities. In ten case study cities, the factors of success and good examples for urban adaption processes were investigated. In discussion with municipal representatives the need for support with the daily tasks of planning has been evaluated. The results of this discussion were included in a practical tool for the implementation of climate change adaptation measures in urban development.

Summary

The project focused on factors of success and challenges for the integration of climate adaptation issues and measures in urban planning processes, especially within the frame of the Urban Development Assistance, such as the urban restructuring programme. One main topic was dedicated to processes of communication and cooperation within the city administration that support the implementation of climate adaptation in urban planning procedures.Spatially, the project focuses on urban regeneration areas with historic and densely populated neighbourhoods.

The methodological core of the project was the exchange with experts from the departments of urban planning and environment from eight german cities (Berlin, Dortmund, Esslingen, Greifswald, Halle, Jena, Kassel, Remscheid). By reflecting case studies concerning climate adaptation in these cities as well as discussing the actual and predictable challenges of climate change in urban space such as heatwaves and droughts, heavy rain events and floods, the goal was to develop a web-based guide in order to help municipalities.
