With the research programme Experimental Housing and Urban Development (ExWoSt) the Federation supports innovative planning and measures regarding important civic and housing political topics through:

From the experiences, hints for the further development of the urban planning and housing policy should be derived and the knowledge transfer supported.

The programme is supervised by the Federal Institute for Research on Building, Urban Affairs and Spatial Development (BBSR) within the Federal Office for Building and Regional Planning (BBR). The BBSR is a is a departmental research institution in the portfolio of the Federal Ministry of the Interior, Building and Community (BMI). It is responsible for research and specialist advice in the spheres of spatial planning, urban development, housing and building.
