The Federal Ministry of Housing, Urban Development and Building (German: Bundesministerium für Wohnen, Stadtentwicklung und Bauwesen) awarded the Bundespreis Stadtgrün 2022 for the second time. The award recognised best practice examples that demonstrated how municipalities can use their urban green spaces to positively influence the urban climate and reduce the negative effects of extreme weather. The award scheme honoured approved innovative concepts for a climate-adapted and vital urban green.
The competition entries had to demonstrate exemplary solutions for climate adaptation and go beyond the everyday issues of municipalities on the subject of urban greening. The competition honoured implemented projects from the past ten years.
The Bundespreis Stadtgrün is a central component of the federal government's urban greening strategy. It is aimed at cities and municipalities of all sizes in Germany with a population of 3,000 inhabitants or more, as well as city and municipal cooperatives with a unifying project. To be eligible to participate, applicants must include at least one institution responsible for public green space in a municipality.
