Research Project: Development of requirements for sustainable building for housing and funding programmes

Project briefing

  • Status Completed
  • Project duration August 2019 – March 2021
  • Programme Future Building

Against the background of increasing rents and the existing shortage of affordable housing in many large German cities and urban agglomerations, it is important to promote new dwellings that are both affordable and sustainable. The aim of the research project was to develop requirements for the sustainable planning and construction of multistorey residential buildings, based on the German Assessment System for Sustainable Building (BNB) and seal of quality for Sustainable Housing: “NaWoh”.

Background

For many years now, the German Federal Government has made sustainability a basic principle of its policy and has acted as a role model, especially in the field of sustainable building.

The Guideline for Sustainable Building and the German Assessment System for Sustainable Building (BNB) by the Federal Ministry of the Interior, Building and Community (BMI) are essential tools to achieve those aims and mandatory for federal building projects. Several criteria profiles based on indicators have been published for the assessment of the qualities of building quality and construction processes. The federal government has an exemplary function for other building owners using the BNB, especially regarding its adopted climate targets. The basic principles and requirements are also be used for the development of standards for sustainable residential buildings and for housing incentive programmes.

Objective

The aim of this project was to develop requirements for sustainable planning and construction of multistorey residential buildings that can be used as an assessment system for new-build dwellings and developments. Methods and basic requirements for sustainable residential buildings therefore had to be drawn up and evaluated to provide a basis to integrate sustainability as a part of future housing programmes and for the public funding of several aspects of sustainable building.

Contractor of the research project was Öko-Zentrum NRW GmbH, Planen Beraten Qualifizieren in Hamm.
