Digitalisation is one of the major trends of social change. It transforms the way we live, work and do business. With research, funding initiatives and model projects in the topic field Smart Cities, the German Federal Government supports municipalities in strategically shaping digitalisation in terms of integrated, sustainable and common good oriented urban development.
On behalf of the Federal Ministry for Housing, Urban Development and Building (BMWSB), the Federal Institute for Research on Building, Urban Affairs and Spatial Development (BBSR) deals with questions of digital transformation in municipalities and analyses the potentials, opportunities and challenges of digitalisation for an integrated urban development.
The model projects Smart Cities develop and test cross-sectoral strategies for urban life in the future. The funded projects are intended to show how the qualities of the European city can be transferred to the age of digitalisation. At the same time, the BBSR supports the National Dialogue Platform Smart Cities with its research and develops guidelines and recommendations for action – including European networking.
