The BBSR and the National Institute of Urban Affairs (NIUA) in New Delhi, India, have been cooperating in the field of applied urban and spatial research since 2018. Together they want to better understand the challenges in both countries and develop solutions for cities and city regions.
In their “Urbanization Prospects”, revised in 2018, the United Nations recall the increasing changes caused by urbanisation as a global phenomenon. Currently 55% of the world population live in urban areas. According to the United Nations, this percentage will rise to 68% by 2050. The portion of the urban population in the European Union would increase from currently 76% to 85%, in Germany from 77% to 84% and in India from 35% to 53% (United Nations 2018).
The departmental research alliance of the BBSR and the NIUA is based on the following goals:
