Type: Specialist article Date 16 April 2021 International departmental research alliance between the BBSR and the NIUA

The BBSR and the National Institute of Urban Affairs (NIUA) in New Delhi, India, have been cooperating in the field of applied urban and spatial research since 2018. Together they want to better understand the challenges in both countries and develop solutions for cities and city regions.

Background

In their “Urbanization Prospects”, revised in 2018, the United Nations recall the increasing changes caused by urbanisation as a global phenomenon. Currently 55% of the world population live in urban areas. According to the United Nations, this percentage will rise to 68% by 2050. The portion of the urban population in the European Union would increase from currently 76% to 85%, in Germany from 77% to 84% and in India from 35% to 53% (United Nations 2018).

Objective

The departmental research alliance of the BBSR and the NIUA is based on the following goals:

  • comparable inventory of spatial structures and trends in both countries and continents,
  • common forms of data usage, for example based on the Global Human Settlement Layer (GHSL), as well as visual and cartographic processing,
  • solution approaches for a sustainable, resilient, inclusive and digitally oriented development for the respective national and possibly supranational and international level as well as cities and city regions,
  • New Urban Agenda of the United Nations and the Sustainable Development Goals as the thematic framework for cooperation,
  • joint work and professional exchange within the framework of the German-Indian government consultations as part of the urbanisation partnership between Germany and India.
